Thinking of Trying Your First Yoga Class? Read This First

Yoga is said to be one of the most healing practices on the planet. When my beautiful Mom passed away a year and a half ago, yoga was and still is one of the only things that has helped with my intense grief. It is a physical and spiritual practice that is sometimes described as “euphoric.” But the cool thing about yoga is that there are so many different styles. There is something for everyone and even if you’re in a class that isn’t your vibe, you can still make it your own.

Stepping into a yoga class for the first time can definitely be daunting. Most likely, you’ll see everyone on their back completely zen’d out in preparation for their practice. It can be a lot, lol. Especially if this whole thing is new to you. Bringing a friend can help. But sometimes, yoga is just really personal and something you need to experience on your own. Before you rip off that new yogi band-aid, let’s explore some popular types of yoga to make sure that you choose what might work for you.

    1. Vinyasa Yoga

Arguably, the most common and well known type of yoga. Several different types of yoga can fit into this category such as Power Yoga, Ashtanga, Baptiste yoga and Prana Flow. What on Earth does all of that mean?! Vinyasa flows consist of series of movements and poses that are coordinated with breath, repetition and sequence. At times, vinyasa can almost feel like choreography. If you grew up as a dancer, like I did, you might naturally be drawn towards this type. These days, there are so many fun types of vinyasa classes. I’ve done Vinyasa in a dark candlelit room while listening to hip hop music. I love a good hot vinyasa class with some Taylor Swift in the background. Or you could go the traditional route and practice in a quiet, non heated studio with no mirrors. If you’re new to the practice, I’d recommend starting here.

    2. Kundalini Yoga

Definitely not for the faint of heart. Kundalini is a faster paced and more intense style of yoga. It focuses on freeing the Kundalini energy that is said to be at the bottom of the spine. These classes are both physically and spiritually demanding. They could include chanting or repeating mantras. This type of class could be a bit intimidating for the yoga novice. But if you’re looking for a full on spiritual awakening, this could be the class for you.

    3. Yin Yoga

Another great class for beginners. Yin yoga is a slow paced more meditative experience that focuses on stretching the muscle tissues and releasing tension within the body. Yoga straps and blocks are often used to assist with the body’s range of motion. If you’re looking for more of a feel-good experience rather than tackling challenging postures, this could be the class for you.

    4 Restorative Yoga

A yoga style for any level of yogi. This style focuses on the complete relaxation of the body and mind. It is often practiced by candlelight and feels amazing in a warmer room. Poses are held for a longer period of time with some lasting up to 5 minutes. Yoga blocks are often used to deepen stretches and make the body more comfortable. It is truly a mind/body experience and the type that I find most difficult. I call this class “brain training.” This type of yoga forces you to lie still for long periods of time while attempting to keep your mind in the present moment. If you’re feeling extra anxious on any given day, I wouldn’t recommend this class. It could be overwhelming and have the opposite affect as you may feel “stuck.” But if your goal is to release tension and reach a complete state of zen, give this class a try!

    5 Ashtanga Yoga

This type is kind of the in betweener. I wouldn’t say it’s as difficult as Kundalini but it is a step above a Vinyasa class. It is a more athletic and intense form of yoga. Unlike Vinyasa, which offers a bit more freedom in the flow, Ashtanga follows a set sequence of poses done in a specific order. The full routine, called the primary series, usually takes about 90 minutes to complete. If you’re someone that wants a good workout and enjoys structure, this could be your class.

These are just a handful of the many types of yoga. It’s a good place to start. If you’re feeling intinimatded, know that you’re not alone! I think there’s a bit of a stigma around yoga and what type of person practcies. Yoga is for everyone. Everyone is a student, even your teacher. There is always something to learn. Let me know in the comments below what how your first class goes or what your favorite type is! If you’re preparing to head to your first yoga class, head in there with your head held high and focus on your breath. Sit in child’s pose for half of the class if you need to. And the most important thing to know. No one is looking at you. I promise.
