  • Five Things to Say “Yes” to in the New Decade

Happy New Year everyone! With each new year comes a whole host of empty promises to ourselves. We’re going to lose weight, we’re going to read more, we’re going to eat more veggies and we’re going to do it while meditating, because we don’t do that enough either. It all sounds incredibly promising and maybe we’ll even stick to these resolutions for a few weeks into January.

But then the excitement of the new year wears off, we get busy and all of these resolutions slip away. Instead of creating strict rules and resolutions for yourself, why not try saying “yes” to a few simple habits that could potentially make 2020 the best year yet?!

    1 Getting More Sleep

Sleep is one of life’s greatest necessities (and gifts.) We are engulfed by a society that always assumes “more is more.” More productivity, more work and more money are not negative goals but sometimes, you just need to take a breather (or a nap!) I am so done with the articles stating that “in order to become a successful woman, you must start your day at 4am.” Unless you are a flight attendant, nursing a newborn or genuinely just LOVE getting up insanely early, there is truly no need. Let your body rest and do NOT feel guilty about it!

2 Becoming More Mindful with Purchases

This is something that I have been working on for the last few years and my shopping habits today are completely different than they were 3 years ago. I am not saying that you need to become a minimalist (unless you want to, in which case, go for it!) I just think that if you truly took a moment to assess what you already own and attempt to avoid impulse purchases, your life (and your bank account) could really benefit. When we buy less and only own what we truly love, it makes those things so much more special.

    3 Adventures

This one speaks for itself! It’s a new year, a new decade and the perfect time to get out and see the world. If every year, you vacation in the same spot, consider changing it up and heading to a place that you’ve never been. If possible, consider heading out of the country and experiencing a new culture and way of life. The Earth is huge and we’ll never be able to see it all but we may as well try!

    4 Writing it Down

Writing is becoming a lost form of art. Do you know that in some schools they don’t even teach cursive writing anymore? I know that a popular resolution in 2020 was to put the phone down…but why not take it even further? Instead of typing your grocery list in your phone, go old school and write it on a small piece of paper. Journal in the mornings! Write letters to friends. Write out Christmas cards and don’t just sign the most perfectly posed portrait of your family in matching pjs (though those are adorable.) Actually write out a card to someone. Wish them well and ask how they are doing. Who knows, you may even receive a response back! Could you imagine?! Receiving a handwritten letter in 2020. That’s going on my bucket list.

    5 Giving Yourself Grace

Girl, life is hard! It is not always a walk in the park. And let me tell you, it’s less than two weeks into the new decade and things aren’t lookin’ so great. But that’s life. We have ups and downs, twists and turns, tears and smiles. But at the end of the day, we must give ourselves grace and allow ourselves to feel. Didn’t get the promotion? It’s ok! There will be others. Don’t fit into that little black dress anymore? Don’t even worry. I ate enough over the holidays for an entire army! Forgiveness and acceptance are two traits that we teach our upcoming generations so why not give ourselves that exact same courtesy? You have got this. In 2020, just breathe, give yourself grace and if the only thing you did today was breathe and survive, you are still doing a pretty damn good job at this thing called life, my friend.

I hope these ideas gave you a bit of inspiration to truly live your best life in 2020! Let me know in the comments below what you plan on saying “yes” to this year.
